Our award-winning distillery is exemplary in the bio and circular economy. We continously explore ways to minimise our carbon footprint – without carbon compensations. We also create less waste, maximise efficiency and conserve natural resources, including the pure, unfiltered ground water used in our beverages.
Our goals 2030:
- Our own operations will be CARBON NEUTRAL by 2025
- By 2023, 100% of our electricity will come from renewable sources
- By 2025, we will decrease the amount of wastewater by 20%
- We will increase circular thinking in all of our operations
- We preserve the pure natural groundwater of our Rajamäki site
- We promote carbon farming practices amongst our contract farmers
The Koskenkorva distillery is based on bio and circular economy: 100% of the grain is utilised. Even the barley husks are utilised as a renewable fuel in the distillery’s own bioenergy power plant. The use of renewable fuel has helped the Koskenkorva plant reduce its fossil carbon dioxide emissions by over 50% and increase its self-sufficiency in terms of fuel in steam generation to about 60% compared to 2014.
The clean groundwater at the Rajamäki plant is a key raw material for Altia’s alcoholic beverages. Protecting groundwater and the soil is of utmost importance to us. We protect the Rajamäki groundwater intake plants in many ways, including owning land in groundwater areas, restricting construction in the areas, and establishing conservation areas.
The Carbon Action initiative strives to enhance sustainable soil management and carbon farming. The pilot stage started in summer 2019 in the fields of selected contract farmers who grow barley for Altia. The five-year project is designed to find out what kind of cultivation practices could help to store more carbon in the soil.
