“Just like something from real life” – leadership training through theatre

At Altia, managers get to develop their skills in intensive and practical training sessions, in which they can observe and process their own actions in diverse and surprising ways.

In the autumn of 2017, Altia launched the “Let’s Lead Better” training for managers, based on short, practical training sessions, from which the participants can immediately adopt elements in their own leadership work. The training makes use of both internal and external coaches, and it employs as diverse processing means as possible.

Among other things, the training has focused on labour legislation, the roles of manager and employee, the manager’s role as a messenger between the management and employees, leading performance, and the creation of trust and security that contribute to open interaction.

The situations were like something from real life, and the actors so good that the training genuinely hit its mark. On top of that, we had a fantastically good time.

Theatre coaching that hit the mark

In the final session of 2017, the participants had the chance to study the cooperation between a manager and their team members by means of theatre. The training was organised by an external partner, Businessteatteri. The participants got to analyse leadership work in situations acted out by actors and to discuss how these situations could have been handled better. The training was constructed on the basis of interviews held with Altia employees who work in the Ruoholahti office and by writing scripts of real working life situations.

The theatrics allowed for concrete examples of working life situations in a way that cannot be captured in lectures. The aim was to produce more experiences that made a bigger impression on the participants, and based on the feedback, this goal was also achieved – with flying colours. The participants found the training as activating, insightful and an interesting way to process different topics. The participants perceived the scenarios as more real, and as something they will remember and that provides them with means to develop their own work.

“The situations were like something from real life, and the actors so good that the training genuinely hit its mark. On top of that, we had a fantastically good time,” says Marketing Director Kaisa Roos, who took part in the training.

Altia will continue to make use of training implemented by theatrical means.
